24-Year-Old Shares Powerful Weight Loss Photos After Her Family Died Of Obesity

Mary Maxwell is a 24-year-old who lost 165 pounds a few years ago, she explained on her GoFundMe. After almost all of her immediate family died of complications from obesity, Maxwell decided not only would she have gastric bypass surgery and take charge of her life, but she’d also share pictures of the excess skin losing so much weight left her with in order to raise money for her next surgery. The before, after, and current pictures are very powerful.

“So many times I’ve looked at the skin and cried. I wonder to myself how I ever could ruin my body the way I did,” Maxwell wrote. “I am usually confident about it but lately more and more people point it out to me and I’ve just had enough.”

Maxwell’s family history is devastating. Her father died before she was born and her mother died when Maxwell was just 2 years old of obesity-related issues. Just before that, her aunt died of a heart attack: “As a 2 year old I was heading in the same direction” as her deceased relatives, Maxwell wrote. She grew up depressed and addicted to food, eating more and more and becoming morbidly obese herself as she got older. Finally in 2011, she and a friend in a similar situation discussed having surgery once and for all.

“Until the miraculous day when I can rid myself of the old me I will hold my head up high and be proud of how far I’ve come. Emotionally it is tough, physically it is tough but I am tough!” Maxwell concluded.
